The City of Destin, located in Florida’s Northwest Panhandle Region, offers easy access to the white sand beaches and emerald waters of both the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. For anglers looking to enjoy what is truly a breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity it is hard to beat this fishing village-turned-tourist destination.
With access to ten beaches, including Henderson Beach State Park; plenty of active fishing charters, party and rental boat opportunities and numerous public boat launches, the biggest problem vacationing anglers will face is deciding what adventure to try. Whether surf cast, dropping a line from a local pier or paddling a kayak, Choctawhatchee Bay offers unmatched numbers of redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead, flounder and bluefish. By heading out into the Gulf you can expect to pick up additional species including red, white or black snapper, triggerfish, sharks, wahoo, sailfish and even tuna.
The Peak Season for Booking Destin Fishing Charters
Although many species can be caught year round, the best time of year for our fishing charters is April through August as this is when the most species are available. However, as with most of the state, expect summer in the Florida panhandle to mean higher temperatures, higher than may be comfortable for long fishing trips.
To best take advantage of available species and comfortable conditions it is suggested that anglers take advantage of the March through June period, when some of the best Destin fishing charters are active, along with most species of fish. Although some of the more exotic species may be harder to locate you will still be there in the heart of the fishing season and more likely to encounter temperatures in a comfortable range of 65-80 degrees.
Unlike Florida’s Atlantic Coast, which is easily accessed by I-95 and numerous international airports, Florida’s Panhandle is considered a bit more remote in terms of travel routes. Until recently, the only air travel was via the Northwest Florida Beach International Airport which services much of the region but is over 42 miles from Destin. However, the recently opened Northwest Regional Airport is a mere 7 miles from downtown Destin and offers a much more convenient option.
Great Accommodations for Destin Fishing Vacations
Destin is truly a beach community and known first and foremost for its fishing opportunities, but that’s not to say the non-anglers in your party will be left standing on the beach awaiting your return. The white sand beaches and picturesque emerald waters provide unequaled swimming as well as a chance to enjoy almost any water activity you can imagine.
In addition to booking adventurous sportfishing charters for sharks or trapper, you can try snorkeling, scuba diving, Jet Ski rental and parasailing. Those are still but a few of the adventures awaiting everyone. Likewise, there are wonderful dining, shopping and sightseeing opportunities on dry land as well.
One visit to Destin and you will understand why it is known as “Florida’s Luckiest Fishing Village”.
