Miami is one of the most popular fishing destinations in Florida and has one of the largest selections of charters in a single city. You can fish multiple days and focus on a different type and style of fishing each day because of its diverse ecosystem. You can also take in the amazing weather and stunning sights on one of the many luxury yacht rentals available for tours and parties, and diving.
Since Miami is such a large city our boats leave from a few different Marinas. Some of the most popular marinas are Haulover Marina, Miami Beach Marina, Bayside Marina and Sea Island Marina. Fishing boats and luxury yacht rentals can be found at nearly all of them. The boats are located a short drive from the Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, giving guests easy access to and from the cruise ships.
Charter Boats available in Miami:
There are three main types of fishing and charters available:
- Offshore fishing
- Flats fishing
Offshore Fishing in Miami
The most popular fishing charter in Miami is offshore fishing. Our offshore fishing charters take you a few miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The gulf stream, which carries warm water past the coast of Florida, is located very close to the coastline, providing the perfect habitat for migratory, pelagic fish.
Captains target fish with live bait, dead bait and lures. Some of our best captains use a technique unique to South Florida called Kite Fishing where they attach the live bait from the fishing rod to a kite which is flown in the air. Kite fishing allows the fishing boat to keep the bait at the surface of the water and minimize the amount of line visible to the fish in the water.
Local fishing charters also drift live bait directly into the water. They often times troll multiple lures or dead baits through the water to make them look like a school of baitfish are swimming. Both of these deep sea fishing techniques target sailfish, blackfin tuna, mahi, wahoo, sharks and mackerel. Miami captains also have the luxury of dropping bait down on one of the many wrecks and reefs located directly off of Miami. Here they target different species of grouper, snapper, and tilefish.
Sportfishing in Miami
Miami also has an abundance of inshore sportfishing options. If you look at Miami on a map you will see that Biscayne Bay runs directly through it. This large body of water and the canals that branch off of it are perfect for light tackle fishing.
The charters that operate in these inland waterways tend to be smaller to give them better maneuverability and they can drive in shallower water than a larger Miami sportfishing boat. The most common types of boats are center consoles, bay boats or flats boats. These charters typically target tarpon, snook, jacks and plenty of other fish.
Flats Fishing in Miami
The third type of fishing charter takes place further south in Miami. Many people come specifically to Miami to try their luck at Flats Fishing. Flats Fishing takes place in very shallow water where the fishing guide and anglers can spot the fish in the water. These fishing charters are perfect for one or two anglers and types of fish include bonefish, permit, sharks, jacks and more.
All of our Miami fishing charters can be adapted for fly-fishing.
